Dot Extravaganza

So I decided to go all in with The Dot by Peter H Reynolds as my beginning of the year project BUT what I did expect is that due to the fact that I am on a 7 day rotation and there have already been some days out (for the 2017 Eclipse (giant Black Dot LOL)) that I am still NOT going to be ready to hang every work for International Dot Day this Friday!

But what I decided to do was a lot of borrowed ideas from Cassie Stephens, since she did all of the grunt work for me (which I totally appreciate by the way) I at least started out the year ready to go!

So Kindergarten we did a collaborative piece. I printed this worksheet and on Day 1 we read the book and added markers and crayons only. Day 2 we watched the YouTube version of the book and cut out our square and then added watercolors, with a how to paint lesson and brush care also thrown in there. Remember I only see my kiddos for 30 minutes so these time periods were jam packed!

This is what they looked like with the first grade artwork around it!

First grade we went over class rules, watched the video on day one and then traced and cut out the base of their line paper sculpture "dot". Day 2 we learned the Larry the Line poem (thank you Cassie) and made our paper sculptures. These two grade levels are really the only 2 completely done!!!!

Second grade we will probably not have them displayed for Dot Day BUT these are so beautiful they might be my annual art show pieces. We did the tissue paper on texture plate Dots and now we are using construction paper to create two large borders around them and adding patterns with Sharpies and construction paper crayons. They are taking for ever BUT look fabulous!!!

Third grade we are all starting with a CD and adding patterns to it using black Sharpies first and then colored to fill in their design. Next we are creating a double frame in two colors of construction paper in any shape the little artist choose. Now we adding BLING with puff paint, beads, and construction paper crayons. These are not going to be fully finished to hang by the 15th except two classes!

Fourth grade we are doing the sewing of the Dots (again Thank you so very much from the bottom of my heart Cassie), BUT these are NOWHERE near completion Aggggggggghhhhhh!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Fifth grade we all began with tissue paper circles 4 inches in size and they were encouraged to half, quarter, eighth, and sixteenth them to create a symmetrically balanced Dot inspired design and all 8 classes have finished these! Whew!!!!
