Drawing what you see and NOT what you know!!!!!!!!

Drawing what you see and not what you know...

At my old school  in Smyrna, TN we had an elective class where the students chose an elective to have everyday for a semester. I do miss this group of kiddos because they chose to be in my class and there was an awesome bond we had. BUT I might challenge my 4th graders here at The ROCK to do the same project and see what kind of creations they can come up with. So be ready Rockvale!

"Drawing what you see and not what you know..."
This is what my 7th graders heard about 50 times in one 40 minute class period. We first got inspiration form this poster that I pinned from Pinterest!

(A huge thank you goes out to https://wonderbrooks.wordpress.com/2015/03/01/express-yourself-paper-mask-sculptures/ for posting that).

Then we began experimenting with folds, twists, bends, etc.... and I really gave them no instruction unless someone specifically asked how to do a particular paper technique.

Finally, we turned off all of the lights, except each table had a small lamp. This was at first super cool and then they looked down and realized that their paper sculpture just became waaaaaayyyyy more complex to draw. They, at first were whiny, but then after some confirmation that I knew that they could do it if they tried and if they would only "draw what they see and not what they know" we will get through this!!!!! Here are some photos of them working on their drawings...super awesome way to study shadows and light! Enjoy!
