Legos and Architecture

I know you have seen a million photos on Pinterest using Legos BUT I wanted to share an actual lesson plan("Ish) blog so you can go for it! My second Graders here at The Rock absolutely LOVED this lesson.
We first watched the video reading "Roberto The Insect Architect" By Nina Laden, a super dooper cute story if you have never read it!

Next we dissected buildings from a PowerPoint I made of cool buildings from all over and all eras. Each student created a sketchbook (a folded sheet of copy paper LOL) and with each slide they were to draw at least one to two things they thought were cool looking. Finally on the back page of their sketchbook they planned out their design for their building.
Like so...

That was all we had time for on Day #1 of our assignment.
Day #2 we reviewed key terms with a Plickers game.
Define architecture.
Define Blueprint.
And for Tennessee second grade science standards they have to determine tools that would be needed for a particular job so we also discussed that.
I also made a YouTube video to show to print with the legos...sorry I did not edit it and it needs to be shortened but a skipped a few parts and it worked great!!! And I did not have to repeat myself eight days in a row...whew!!!

Next we took about 10 minutes to add any last minute details to our sketchbook building drawings.
Then they grabbed their large white paper and began stamping using Legos and Blue Tempera paint to create their "Blueprints"....clever I know :P !

Day#2 is now over so we cleaned up.
Day#3 One last review, finish stamping, and if needed a little hairdryer action before we began to add color to our Blueprints. Viola we are finished with our "Awesome Architect Blueprints". Hope you enjoy!!!
